I don't make New Year resolutions. Mostly because I do not want to make a promise to myself if I'm not sure I'll follow through. I will make resolutions throughout the year when I know I have the motivation to do my best.
For example, I didn't make my resolution to do a race a month for 2018 till I was half way through the year. It was a spontaneous one when I realized that I had done 6 months of that without even trying. It allowed me to keep up with my running and rehabbing my knee because I wouldn't do any more than 5ks. What I learned from this is that there are a lot of local races out there that are a ton of fun. Most of the races I did last year were new to me races.
This year, I only have the Ukrop's 10k on my list. I have done this race 9 times in the past - but not sequentially. I'll also get the third medal in this streak to go with these two.
I have nothing else planned. I'm not even planning on doing any runDisney races. I've done at least one a year for the last five years and while I will miss the good times, I need to rest. I have found that the weekends were just exhausting.
I'd like to try a few new races out this year. But my real goal is to make sure my knee holds up as the year comes up. This means more cross training on my calendar. And making sure I do my stretches and exercises 5-7 days a week.
I think I'd also like to do the Ride and Run race again at Kings Dominion. That is a mini-runDisney race that was a lot of fun. Who knows what the year will bring, but I hope it will be fun and my knee holds up.

2018 Races in Pictures (Friday Five Edition)
In January all I had planed race-wise was two runDisney events and Ukrop's 10k. By June, I had done at least one of each of the first 6 months. I then decided to continue and do at least one per month for the rest of the year. I sort of accomplished that. All except December. I signed up for one, but it was cancelled due to the foot of snow we got that weekend. I still may be able to do one in December, on the 31st. It's one right before midnight and the plan is to do it unless it's raining.
I found that because of this, I did a lot of new to me races. Except for Ukrop's and the runDisney races that I had already signed up for at the beginning of the year, I have not done any of these races. All of them I would do again. I don't know the plan for next year, and probably won't do the one a month race (though I still may), I want to continue trying new races out. There are plenty out there that I haven't done yet.

Big Hairy Audacious Goal (Tuesdays on the Run Edition)
Currently I don't have any Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAG) for running. Or really anything grand like that. Well except for retirement, but I don't think that was the intended for this topic. I have done most everything running wise that is on my bucket list. Except I'd maybe like to do a 70.3 or commonly known as a half Ironman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run). I don't see that happening any time soon. So I thought I would recap some of my BHAGs from the past.
My First 10k
When I first started running, thoughts of running anything more then a 5k was something I never thought I would do. While I had walked the Ukrop's 10k a few years in the past, running it was nothing I thought I wanted to do. In 2011 I joined the training team and each week I surprised myself and ran the whole long run. And three months later I ran my first 10k. It's funny reading back at that post as I said that I didn't think I would want to do something that long again. I love the 10k distance now. In fact I do the Ukrop's 10k almost every year now.
My First Half
I actually had a different blog when I wrote up my recap of my first half marathon in 2012, the Richmond Half Marathon. I honestly don't remember what made me want to run a half marathon, but I joined the training team and stuck to the plan. The funny thing about that is I didn't think I would want to do that distance more then once a year. Since 2014 I don't think I've done less then 2 half marathons a year.
My First Tri
The next year, in 2013, I did my first triathlon. It was the Pink Power Sprint, which was an all women pool tri, which is very first timer friendly. This is another one that I don't remember why I made it my big goal. I just knew that I had been swimming and biking since I was little and now that I had been running for a couple years putting all three together might actually be fun. While I could run, bike, and swim with no problem, putting all three together was something I just knew nothing about. I joined a local tri training group which helped conqueror my fear of doing something so daunting. I was glad to have the training group as they showed us things that we would need to know, I also still have great friends that I met through it.
My First Marathon
In 2014 I had run a couple runDisney half marathons and started eyeing a new challenge. I was one of those that said I would never run a marathon. Never say never! I had signed up to run the 2015 WDW Marathon as my first. Despite having food poisoning and going to the ER the day before, it actually was a great race. I followed my training closely and that really paid off. Should probably remember that next time. lol
First (and only) Dopey
In 2014 runDisney announced a new challenge, run the 5k, 10k, half, and full in one weekend. They called this the Dopey Challenge, because you have to be, well, Dopey to do it. I had always been intrigued with Dopey and after I ran my first marathon I knew it was something I wanted to do. And in 2016 I did. Luckily I am a stubborn person. Training for this race was long and it was hard. It was the hardest weekend I had ever experienced running. By Sunday I was done. I had pain in my calf before I started the marathon and just did everything I could to finish. This is one that I don't think I want to do again. I'm glad I did it cause now I know I can do anything as long as I put in the training and commitment.

And then of course I went to Disneyland the next weekend to participate in the Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend. Yes, I did 7 races in 11 days covering 71 miles. I didn't plan it that way. They had announced the Star Wars Weekend after I signed up for Dopey and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to be part of the inaugural race and well it's Star Wars. The funny thing is the Star Wars Half was the most fun race of all of them.

Back to Back Marathons
After I finished Dopey, I knew the next marathon I wanted to run was the Marine Corps Marathon. Since the Richmond Marathon is just two weeks after MCM I decided to join the Richmond Marathon training team. This would be the first time since my first Half Marathon that I would be training with a group. I was very excited to not have to worry about fuel since they would have SAGs. And I would have the chance to run with others. I knew that I would probably change my race distance at the Expo and just run the half or 8k.
The MCM was HOT and the last 8 miles were miserable as we were out of the fun part of DC and there was no shade. While I am very proud of that race and did PR, I knew with the great training I had had, I could have done better if it weren't for the heat. I left changing the race distance for Richmond at the Expo. By then I felt great. So I decided to run the Richmond Marathon 2 weeks later. I am now a Marathon Maniac.
We will see if I have any other crazy goals at some point. You guys will be the first to know!
What have been some of your BHAG? Do you have any coming up?

Star Wars Dark Side 10k 2018 (Friday Five Edition)
I'm finally getting to my Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon Weekend recaps from April.

In case you missed previous posts from the Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon Weekend:
Just like the morning before for the 5k, I got up early so that I could meet Kelly and Franklin by 3:30 at the buses. The start of the 10k was in the parking lot of Magic Kingdom. Of the three races, I think I have the hardest time with the 10k as I am the most tired. Two days of non stop and then yet another early morning makes me a bit cranky.
We got there and got another photo with Phasma.

Kelly and I were in Coral C while Franklin was in Coral B. This was a race that we all were on our own for. Franklin wanted to race this one, while I wanted to walk as much as I could and Kelly was somewhere in the middle.
The race started off in Magic Kingdom and made its way down through Hollywood Studios and then to the Finish at Epcot. It was much like the course last year.
For the first three miles there was nothing to look at and with the lack of sleep, I was really in a bad mood. I didn't bring my earphones, so I was just stuck with the thoughts in my head, which really didn't help my mood. It was in the mid-60's, not too bad for Florida.
About mile 3 we got close to Hollywood Studios. The 501st Legion was there again. It is always fun to see all the different Star Wars characters, especially those that Disney does not highlight.
We entered right behind Tower of Terror. As we came around the front, I saw a photo op with a bell hop from Tower of Terror. Never seen that, and there was basically no line, so I went on over.

We quickly headed out of Hollywood Studios. I can't wait till more of that park is open, maybe they might let us run more through it then the little we do now. But as we left, there was this beautiful sunrise.

And then a picture with The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

As I was heading to the path to Epcot there was a man with his dog and man, did I need the puppy love. I stopped and snuggled and played with the pup for a little bit and that just lifted my spirits.

On the path to the Boardwalk, there was the speeder bikes. I pretended that it was going too fast for me.

We finally got to the Boardwalk. The Boardwalk is one of my favorite places to run. The crowds are amazing and just what I need by the time I get there in any race.
Around the Boardwalk and into Epcot. The sunrise continued to be amazing.

Around to Spaceship Earth. The Storm Troopers were there again. The last couple of miles really perked my mood, so I thought I would have some fun with this photo too.

More of the 501st Legion was there at Mile 6. Love the purple of this R2 unit.

Another selfie with the Storm Trooper at the finish. I might have accidentally elbowed someone as I did that. Opps. Sorry!!

And finish.

I got ice for my knee again. Even though it was OK, I still wanted to preempt any pain. Got my snacks, water, and took some more beautiful pictures of the sunrise. While the first 3 miles were really horrible, the last 3 miles really made up for it.

After I got back to my room, I showered and stretched. I ended up taking like a 3 hour nap I was so tired. I stayed off my feet as much as I could cause I knew that the half the next day was going to be a doosie.

Do you have a favorite park to run through during a runDisney race? Do you ever stop to pet the dogs that come out to cheer? Have you ever smacked someone while trying to take a selfie (in a race or not in a race)?

Magic Kingdom 2018 (Tuesdays on the Run Edition)
I'm finally getting to my Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon Weekend recaps from April.

In case you missed previous posts from the Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon Weekend:
After showering and stretching and resting a little, I met up with Kelly and Franklin to get something to eat. I love going to the parks with Kelly as she knows all the good things to do that I didn't even know existed. I hadn't been to Magic Kingdom since my first time doing a runDisney event at Disney World in 2014 and wanted to do it Kelly-style.
We got into the park and the first thing we saw was the "Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It! Street Party" parade.

It was fun to see it, but man was it crowded. So we moved on to Tomorrowland.

We decided to head over to Tom Sawyer's Island. I have never been there and thought it might be fun. Though I have to say by then my feet were starting to not be happy. We had to take a very short boat trip across the water first.

We headed up the path and decided to go into Old Scratch's Mystery Mine. I hated it. I'm very claustrophobic and the floors and walls were not even. And it just kept getting smaller and tighter. I wanted out as fast as possible.

There were some great views of Big Thunder Mountain from there.

We headed over to explore Fort Langhorn. It had a barn like area that had audio animatronic horses, black smiths, and chickens, all which made sounds. There was also a jail.

On the second floor they had areas where you could pretend to shoot rifles, known as a Rifle Roost.

And some beautiful views of the water.

We decided to head to the main land. Both Kelly and I were getting very tired but Franklin wanted to head up to the Mill while we waited for the boat. He said that it was a mill, nice to see, but we didn't miss anything.

We still had some time before our last FastPass so we ended up at It's a Small World.

And we are heading into the tunnel of worlds. Rider selfie!

I have to say that I think I enjoy the holiday theme of this ride. It is fun to see it decorated for the holidays and it does give your ears a break from just one song.

Our next FastPass were in separate directions. Because I had issues with my ticket, the reservations that I had got lost and we had to do last minute adjustments so that I could ride at the same time as them. The one ride it didn't work on is the Seven Dwarfs ride. This is another ride that was closed when I was there last time and really bummed me out that I would miss it this time as well. Kelly and Franklin headed to the Seven Dwarfs and I went to the Haunted Mansion.

The ride is fun to see the special effects. It's just not one that I would not wait in line for.

Since my FassPass was a little earlier then theirs I took my time heading to the restaurant for dinner. My sunglasses had broken earlier in the day so I looked at the expensive ones that they were selling in a shop in Aventureland. I couldn't see spending that much on sunglasses but it was fun trying them on.
I headed to the Skipper Canteen where we were having dinner. I met up with Kelly and Franklin who where already there. I was surprised that they beat me there and they said that the Seven Dwarfs ride was broken and they were not able to ride. Well that made me feel a little better about not getting a FassPass with them.

I had never eaten there, but they had and raved about it. We got seated and then had to wait almost half an hour to have someone take our drink orders. Being tired and hungry was not a good combination to have when the wait staff was backed up. On top of it, our table was right in the middle next to the door so there was a lot of traffic right around us. It just was awkward.
For an appitizer I had the Orinoco Ida's Cachapas which was corn pancakes toped with pork, black bean salad and avocado cream. OMG that was so goood!!!! I could have had a bigger portion for my meal. YUM!!

For my entree, I had the Sankuru Sadie's Seafood Stew. This was just OK. The seafood was good, but I was not a fan of the sauce. So I pulled the seafood out and ate it with the rice.
By the time we were done and had to wait extra, we were done. All I wanted to do is get off my feet. Though on the way out we did stop by one of the shops because Kelly wanted to get one of the seasonal Alex and Ani bracelets. I ended up getting a BB-8 bracelet while we were there. And I got a replacement pair of glasses, too. Not the best, but they would do to get me through the rest of the weekend.

Have you explored Tom Sawyer's Island? Have you submitted a joke to the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor? If not, do you have a joke? What's your favorite ride at Magic Kingdom?
In case you missed previous posts from the Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon Weekend:

It was fun to see it, but man was it crowded. So we moved on to Tomorrowland.
We didn't have a FastPass till 12:45, which was the Buzz Lightyear ride, so we wondered around finding something to ride. We headed onto the Peoplemover.

I had been on it in 2014 and found that it's a nice relaxing ride.

There were great views of the castle.

The race track.

And the park. It really is a nice way to see Tomorrowland.

We headed over to get a picture with Buzz himself before we went over to ride his ride. There was a mother in line in front of us that was on the phone and not paying attention to her kid. The Cast Members had to come over a couple times to ask the kid to stop doing something and the mother barely acknowledged them. Buzz saw my medal and asked if I ran. He was very impressed.

We still had a little more time before our FastPass, so we headed into Monsters Inc Laugh Floor. I had never seen the show and I was told by both Kelly and Franklin that it would be great. Once we got into the theater and took our seats, it was one funny joke after another.

Mike was our MC while Roz was there to make sure there was no funny business going on, though that was the point. We were told that we wouldn't be able to be let out till the tank was filled and the more you laughed the more it filled.

Several different monsters came out to tell us jokes. They would talk to and about audience members. The improv was fantastically funny. The people behind the sceens doing the jokes right on the spot were amazing. This is the type of show that would be different every time you saw it.

After the show it was time for our FastPass at Buzz Lightyear. I've done this ride as well as the counterpart in Disneyland and it's so much fun.

Within the first shots, I hit something that was worth 100,000 points. And then I hit it again. So within the first minute of the ride, I had over 200,000 points and I had no idea what I had hit to do that as I was just remembering how to aim and was just shooting all over the place. By the end I had almost 400,000 points. I've never scored that high!

After that we headed back out and towards Aventureland. Another beautiful shot of the castle.

When we made it to the center area there was another parade going on. This time it was the "Mickey's Royal Friendship Faire" parade. We stopped and watched a little of it.

Once in Adventureland we decided to get a Dole Whip. While I know I tried one in 2014, I don't remember being very impressed with it and wondered what all the hype was. Trying it again, it was fabulous. Not sure if my taste buds were off last time or what, but it is definitely a must have when down there.

We decided to head to the Tiki Room to eat our treats. I had only been once at Disneyland and loved it, so yes, we had to go back and see the show. The guy that started the show was hilarious! He could have been part of the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor.

After the wonderful singing we heard, we made our way out of Aventureland and to Frontierland. It was time for our FassPasses for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Last time I was here, it was closed down, so this was a first for me. I was very excited for it. I do have to say that I loved it and wished that the line wasn't so long so we could ride again.
